Do you agree with breed specific legislation?
What would you ideally like to see in place of bsl to protect the interests of dogs and humans?|||BSL is a waste of time and resources. It doesn't technically out law a breed, it out laws a certain type of dog (those that look like 'pit bulls', rotties etc). It is also supported by PETA which means that it is part of the anti-pet movement.
DDO is what is needed. Dangerous dog ordinances that are well thought out and executed are more effective than BSL. Or we can follow suit with Calgary.

I just wanted to post about the city of Calgary and their success. I hope others can used their example.
They have no BSL. They do have a dangerous dog act - a dog of any breed can earn a DD title by attack infractions and then have restrictions put on it.
They have no MSN. Instead they have a responsible dog ownership education program that starts right in the elementary grades.
They have a 98% licensing compliance rate - which means of the 4800 dogs they admitted in 2006, 88% went home within 24 hours. In a city with a population of 1 million people and 100 thousand+ dogs, the single animal control facility only needed to find homes for 338. The only euthanized were those deemed unhealthy and untreatable - 5%.
The City of Calgary has built its entire program on a foundation of responsible pet ownership as opposed to the traditional animal control regulation.|||Yes and no. I personally a think there should be legislation requiring those interested in buying certain breeds to have them set up in obedience school [though really that would be nice requirement for everyone] before purchase. Or have some sort of protective measure for the dog to make sure it isn't used for illegal purposes or left untrained. However, I don't agree with the present bsl in some states and countries which either ban certain breeds [like those in the pit bull category] or ban them form being adopted out of shelters. It's sad and unfair, in that case.|||NO,I dont agree with BSL in any way,I firmly belive there are different solutions to problems than banning a specific breed ...there are bad dogs in any breed because of irresponsible, ignorant owners and my favorite saying right now is "STUPIDITY RUNS DOWN THE LEASH!" lets work on stricter laws for spay, neuter and have strict restrictions on owners of so - called dangerous breeds....fines for backyard, irresponsible breeders would be a start!!!!!|||I have said it before, I will say it again...until breed clubs come up with a STRICT way of policing their own breeding practices and what they produce, what dogs get papers and which ones are CULLED, yes culled, as in put down, not simply removed from the breeding gene pool to end up as problem children in someone else's hands.
A good model to look after is the SV or the ADRK clubs of Germany, as much as possible and decide on Koermasters and whatever else would be needed to make sure that breeders are producing dogs that are stable, that are capable of doing the work they were intended on doing, first and foremost, that temperament and nerves take precedence
over looks and crap like that.
Until this happens BSL will continue to flourish and develop, weather we like it or not. Hope I helped!!|||I think the right person needs to handle certain breeds. So if there was a way to control who got a pitbull (and I'm not just singling out pits) then the risk to humans would diminish considerably. It's not the dog's fault.... ever. It is always how well the human trains their dog. Period.
Maybe you should be required to take advanced dog training courses for specific breeds. Maybe a more intensive program should be designed for adoption of specific breeds.|||I think it should be condemn the deed not the breed, people should ensure they keep both their dogs and people safe, owners should take responsibility and no breed should be defined as being dangerous.
if people allow dogs to harm people or dogs they should suffer the consequences legally for not keeping their dogs under control the breed of dog is irrelevant|||BSL is stupid. Anyone who calls themself a dog lover yet supports BSL . . . Just isn't a dog lover. It's only a matter of time until everyone's breed is affected by it.

What I would like to see in place of it is OSL. Make backyard breeding and puppymilling illegal. Enforce and strengthen leash laws and animal cruelty laws.|||No I definitely do not support it
I think some sort of ownership license should come into play when any animal is involved
It seems anyone can walk out the door and buy a potentially lethal dog yet you have to have a license to buy a car
It just seems crazy there's nothing out there to protect dogs of certain breeds falling into the hands of unscrupulous buyers|||i really think that when a person gets cought in drugs or fighting and has these mis understood breeds such as apbt or rotts i think by law they should never be able to have those breed of dogs again and the only breed they can have are chi's. on a more serious note i do not support the BSL in any way. i was once one of those people that believed everthing i saw on the media about pits and then my bf got our 1st red nose. he changed my way of thinking and now even my parents have one at their house. its not a breed thing its all in how you raise them. any breed will bite!!!!|||Politicians don't know and don't give a flying fvck about dogs.
BSL is a B/S and an easy way out for these morons.
Late Entry : as to your "protecting the interests"
heavy fines for breeder fvck ups and bastard "owners" would take care of the problem.
When it comes to money to these pricks, it hurts!!!!!!!|||BSL is stupid,,,why not regulate the owners,,,spay and neuter them. anydog can have a bad streak,,,anydog can be trained to do anything. BSL is a bandaid to the problem. why isnt it required to muzzle a poodle that can be VERY snippy. many little dogs are more prone to biting than large breeds.
many BSL are very vague. anything that looks like or has a trait of a certain breed is targeted. BSL is NOT the answer. you need to go after the people who train, treat, raise animals in a inhumane way.
i am proud to say i own a rottie, and a lab/pit mix. my dogs have never bit anyone,,nor shown aggression to anyone. they both play with a 15month old child.
More people need to be educated and more people need to be responsible. BSL will do nothing. Once a breed is "gone" they will move on to another breed. it is genocide in the canine world
*note many small breeds are very aggressive and very quick to bite,,,just because a small dog cannot do as much damage why are they not regulated, and muzzled, and killed. that would kinda be like a large man being put down because he knocked someone out in a fight,,,but the little man gets nothing because he cannot hit as hard and only left a bruise.
if you are going to pass regulations on dogs,,,make it across the board,,do not single out one breed over another, just because it is bigger. enforce the leash laws to EVERYONE.
im sure BSL you are referring to pit bulls and the such. many do not even know what a TRUE pit looks like. many are mislabeled. just because a dog has a deep chest, dark fur, and muscular does not make it a pit bull. people have misidentified boxers, dobies, rotties, ridgebacks, mastiffs, etc as pit bulls.|||It's been seen time and again that BSL doesn't work.
In an ideal world, no one would own a dog until they were fully prepared to take responsibility for the the dog and its needs.
Not going to happen - people don't look after the children properly so what chance do dogs have?|||BSL is stupid. No sense to it at all. What would I like to see in place of BSL? I think we should spay and neuter all bad dog owners. We don't allow sick dogs to breed, so why would we let sick people?|||Enforcement of leash/control laws for all breeds would go a long way towards protecting the public.
Dogs that bite for no good reason, regardless of breed, should be euthanized.|||I wish there was person specific legislation!!! No Idiots or macho fools could own a dog - there could be a test to see if you were in the stupid category.|||No I do not agree with it
I would like to see something in place for dog owners, rather than the dogs themselves.|||We need a dangerous owners act instead. A dog is only what the person makes it.|||Ban stupid people, not dogs.|||i support the bans on dangerous dogs
