What if people were more directly impacted by the cost of legislation?

I think people would care more about what was being passed if they were more directly impacted by the cost of the legislation. Right now, expensive legislation is passed and people don't really feel the impact of the cost, so it doesn't really matter to them. But our children and grandchildren will feel the impact for sure.

What if people had to pay their per taxpayer portion of the national debt by the end of this year? Right now, that's over $100,000 and growing.

Things like the war in Iraq and Health Care Reform wouldn't have even seen the light of day.|||I wonder if I offered to pay my share of the debt ($100,000) if they would agree to leave me the hell alone.|||Agreed. Hell, social security and medicare wouldn't exist either if people realized how much it was actually going to cost them.

In fact, if they started billing people at the end of the year instead of taking the tax out of their check every year there would be a lot more outrage.|||yes people would revolt|||If Bush had told the truth about the costs of war (s) it never would have happened. Even if he lied about the cost but taxed to make the payments America would have revolted.|||We should have to pay our taxes directly instead of payroll deduction. Then you would have a revolt.

This was started during WWII but was really intended to hide personal contributions. " I don't pay taxes I get some back" .... Geez!
