Hold music legislation - what if you are using your own songs?

I've read countless web pages on hold music legislation, about performing rights licenses and what-not. What I can't find is a page that covers using an unsigned artist's self-penned composition. Does the company still need a license? Does the artist lose any rights to his/her material or can they 'lend' it? Hope someone can help.|||I'd say that the artist runs the risk of having someone else copyrighting their work. For your own protection, copyright it, and give rights to the company. I doubt it's expensive.|||To prevent getting copyright issues when you using a music on hold service is by consulting a company to provide one for you. |||www.soulseek.com is a peer to peer network for unsigned bands sharing thier own stuff|||no, actually, you can just write anything you want and perform anywhere if you can get the chance. If not, how do those singers get their chance?
